Day 1 of 30/30/30

30/30/30 is a fitness goal I’ve set for myself for the month of February. My hope is to complete 30 thirty-minute workouts in 30 days. Technically it isn’t February yet, but I decided to get a jumpstart on this goal. Why wait, right?

Forcing a fitness habit: 30/30/30

I’ve been flirting with getting in shape for well over a year now and it’s time to take some serious action to make this a true lifestyle habit. So for February I have made the goal to complete 30 thirty minute workouts in thirty days. Y’all know I don’t have the best track record with consistently blogging a project. Remember when I was going to post one picture every day for a year? That lasted something like a record-breaking 8 days.

Actual food? Nope. Not here.

The next thing I know it’s January and I’ve moved to 30 hours per week. The original schedule already felt like full time anyway, so why not bump it up a little and make some extra cash?

That’s all well and good on paper. It’s the day-to-day living that I’m struggling with. You know, the stuff like cooking supper, bathing my child, bathing myself, doing laundry, doing anything after 5:00 p.m., etc.

If you’re looking for someone who eats real food right now it’s not me, but …

REAL enchiladas by Karin from Mexico

boiled tomatoes and serrano peppers in blender

I’m so lucky to have an amazingly diverse group of friends. There’s Jennifer’s husband Atif from Pakistan, Rene’s husband Bruno from Peru and Karin from Mexico.

Steve and I might be the only 100% cracker couple in the group. No. That’s a lie. Nick and Sarah are whiter than we are. Oh, and Shannon and Nathan.

Speaking of Shannon, she had the brilliant idea to have Karin teach us how to make REAL enchiladas. Here’s what happened

This is the good stuff: Baking cookies with toddlers

Messy kitchen from baking cookies with toddlers

One of my most distinct memories from childhood is standing on a metal step stool at my great-grandmother’s house making sugar cookies. I remember the sweet vanilla smell;  what the cutter felt like going into the rolled out and flour-coated dough; and the sound of the sprinkles in the shaker. I also remember the aprons Nanny wore. They were so 1955. So beautiful.

ChopChop is FunFun: Healthy Magazine Makes Kids’ Meals Cool

This spring I discovered an amazing magazine just for kids that’s all about healthy eating and activities. It’s a little advanced for my punkin’ but it will come in handy down the road. For those of you who have school-aged kids it’s worth checking out.

Fall Garden Tips for a Worry-Free Winter

My friends at STIHL and Outdoor Living Expert P. Allen Smith offer advice for fall gardening.
For a continuously healthy garden, it’s best to stay one season ahead. Throughout the autumn months, prepare for winter, and spare your plants from the oncoming cold by following these tips.

Gawking as Exercise: These Are the People in Your Neighborhood

Today I noticed that dog-hoarding crack house appeared to have been gutted, which hopefully means the hot mess tenants are gone.

Simplify: Lunch Making Station

In this container I store snack and sandwich bags, container drinks, candy, and individually packaged foods. Above that layer I like to store the lunch boxes and maybe the open bag of chips if I haven’t already divided them up into appropriate sized snack bags. You can also store a copy of the school’s monthly lunch menu in here and decide ahead of time if there is a day your child will be eating the school’s lunch (yay, no lunch prep for you!).

Drought-Proof Your Garden and Your Water Bill By Installing Soaker Hoses

We’re no Mirage at Las Vegas. All we’ve done is install a couple soaker hoses and buried them shallowly in our raised beds. That’s part of the beauty of raised beds. You have more control over the environment of your garden.
